An OB's Response to the AMA Resolution #205

On February 6, 2008 the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) issued a statement advising against home birth and non-nurse midwives. (http://www.acog.org/from_home/publications/press_releases/nr02-06-08-2.cfm ). The timing of this statement coincided with the release of Ricki Lake's documentary, "The Business of Being Born." ACOG even hinted at such by saying "Childbirth decisions should not be dictated or influenced by what's fashionable, trendy, or the latest cause célèbre."

More recently, the American Medical Association (AMA)'s House of Delegates issued Resolution 205 on 4/28/08 which mirrors the ACOG statement and actually cites the documentary filmmaker's influence:

Featured Well-Rounded Maternity Center Staff Person

Melissa Paap-Young is someone you should know!

Everyone who works at the birth center or Bellies & Babies Boutique is passionate in some way about natural pregnancy, birth and parenting. Melissa's passion is yoga. Although she does work in the boutique, Melissa is happiest when she is helping moms-to-be, kids and even babies experience the joys of yoga.

Melissa says:

"I started my journey with Well-rounded Maternity 3 1/2 years ago when I learned I was pregnant with my first child. Being a big fan of yoga I signed up for classes. After my daughter Adeline was born, I continued attending yoga at the Birthing Center. It was during those sessions that the idea to become a yoga teacher and teach toga at Well-Rounded Maternity bloomed."

  Writing a Birth Plan

As a birth professional, the single most important advice I can give any women in labor is to surrender all of her control, allowing the instinctive process to work effectively. She can't let go, however, if she is worried that others will make choices for her. The birth plan is an ideal way to communicate her preferences, so the mother-to-be can focus fully on the amazing process of birthing a baby.

The choices for labor are greater today than ever before, including place of birth (hospital home or birth center), care provider (OB, family practice doctor, CNM, CPM), support (family, friends, doula), and type of labor (managed, natural, scheduled cesarean). Writing a birth plan can stimulate a woman or couple to investigate their options, discuss those options with each other and their care provider, and make meaningful choices without the vulnerability experienced during labor.

 Children At Birth
Nine years ago our son Michael joined the family, just two days before Thanksgiving. He was born at home, and the first faces he saw were those of his siblings. Ten seconds after Michael was placed on my chest, his 2 ½ year old sister jumped up on the bed, thrust a "Tigger" in his face and asked him if he wanted to play. His ten year old brother scrambled over the bed to get to the phone and call his friends who were just getting home from school to tell them the news.

We cherish those memories and so do our three children.

If you are expecting another child, you may be wondering about the wisdom of having your child(ren) attend the upcoming birth. Labor is hard work and many women are concerned about the possible distraction that their children may present, or the potential impact that viewing birth may have on the sibling(s). This article is intended to help you explore the issues surrounding this important decision.
