"The
Birth Center is a remarkable place. Behind
all the wonderful services exists a powerful
and supportive community. This community
creates an energy you can't help but be
touched by, an energy that leaves you feeling
lighter and more capable. It is energy that
is drawn from every woman that offers an
outstretched hand to another in their time of
need, from arms extended to another in
support, in grief, or in joy. It is energy
drawn from the sweat of the women who dim the
lights, who light the candles, who fluff the
pillows, who fill the tub. Energy from the
women who spend many sleepless nights trying
to ease the burden of another. An energy that
comes from shared tears and shared knowledge.
An energy that comes alive with every laugh.
An energy that is created when the first
breath of life occurs. Energy from the moment
a man becomes a father. An energy that
thrives in a place that was built so that
others would profit from its love and support
and wisdom. I rode that energy through my
pregnancy, through my labor, and again
through my recovery from a birth that didn't
go as planned. I continue to draw from it
every time I am faced with a new question. I
will forever regret that fate didn't allow my
son's birth to happen at the Center but I
will forever be grateful that my birth as a
